Standalone and VST3 plugin for Windows

PianoFlex

A piano with no samples in it. Every note is calculated as you play, so there are no velocity layers to jump between and no loops to hear. Many pianos in one program of about 12 MB.

The PianoFlex window, with sections for build, character, hammer, strike, strings, sustain, body, mics and reverb
The PianoFlex window: the Session Player, with every part of the piano open to shape.

Character generator

A new piano at the press of a button.

Press Generate and PianoFlex builds a piano that has never existed: its own color, its own ring, its own personality from key to key, all computed on the spot.

Turn Strength down for a subtle variation of a familiar grand, or up for a piano with real character. Press Variation for its siblings: relatives of the piano you have, from close to distant. It always stays a piano, by design.

It works while you play. Notes already sounding ring out, and the next note you play is the new piano. Undo brings back the last one.

Found one you love? It's a number. Save it as a preset, and it comes back exactly as it was.

Nearly a billion characters, each with its own variations.

  1. Character strength
  2. 0The plain piano.
  3. 10–25A slightly different piano.
  4. 50Clearly another piano.
  5. 100Everything the character has, still within a real piano's range.
  6. The character decides what changes: color, ring, bloom, how each note's overtones start and move, how alike or uneven the keys are. Strength decides how much.

No samples

Every sound you hear is computed: the hammer, each string's ringing overtones and how they fade and beat, the soundboard and body, the dampers and pedals.

33 pianos built in

Session Player plus 32 more in seven families: Concert & Classical; Intimate; Uprights & Vintage; Pop & Band; Jazz, Soul & Gospel; Film & Ambient; Experimental.

Shape anything

The hammer, strings, dampers, soundboard, microphones and room are each something you can shape, many of them key by key, while you play.

Four slots

Compare up to four pianos side by side, or layer them.

Record and render

Record what you play, or render a MIDI file straight to audio, faster than real time.

Light on resources

About 12 MB, with no gigabytes of samples to load. Light on computer resources.

How it was voiced

Measured, not sampled.

PianoFlex was voiced by measuring freely licensed recordings of real pianos, key by key. Not one note of them is in PianoFlex: every sound you hear is computed. See our credits page.
